POP or SODA – It’s All Sugar to Me!

If you are from Pennsylvania, you can tell where a person comes from by which word they use for the cola beverage.  If you are from the Pittsburgh side, you say “pop.”  However, if you are from the Philadelphia side, you say “soda.”  No matter.  It’s the same thing.  It’s a whole bunch of sugar you are drinking to satisfy your thirst.  The funny thing is that you can be thirstier faster.  Wow!

A few years ago, I went to a nutritionist to get advice on sources of protein I could eat.  When she found out I drank cola, she spent the rest of the time that I was paying for to convince me to stop drinking it.  She had sugar cubes in her hand to show me how much sugar I was consuming in drinking one drink.  Guess what?  She just made me angry.  First of all, that wasn’t why I was paying her.  She took it upon herself to rid myself of that “evil” (my words) habit.  Second of all, I don’t drink coffee or tea, so why was she going on so about what I drank?

I didn’t want to listen then.  I wasn’t ready.  Now I understand and agree with everything she said that day, but at the time, I just wanted her to get off the subject.  So if you are ready to find out, here’s the scoop.  According to Nancy Appleton, PhD, who wrote Suicide by Sugar, the average 12 ounce soft drink has about 10 grams of sugar per serving.  I’m reading her book, and I’m amazed at what I’m finding out.
