Pesky Plateaus

Gosh darn it all, I’m at another one of those pesky plateaus.  You know how it is.  You get to a certain weight, then you go up a little followed by down a little.  It’s maddening.  It doesn’t seem like anything is happening.   However, the scale isn’t the only way to measure weight loss.    You find your slacks seem a little looser than you remembered.  The waistband isn’t as tight.  There are some real changes going on even if the bathroom scale doesn’t seem to recognize them.  Changes are happening in my body, but nobody clued in the scales.  It seems that all the action is behind the scenes.

I’ve been going sugar free for almost a year now, and the scales and I aren’t always on friendly terms.  This is one of those times.  This is when I’m tempted to slack off from my sugar free diet.  That’s just the thing.  It’s not really a diet for me.  I call the website “Sugar and Diet,” but it’s become a “Sugar Free Lifestyle.”  Now, when I’m tempted to have something with sugar, I may eat it, or I may not.   It’s much more of a choice.  My food choices are more “thoughtful” as in giving them more thought before I eat a sugary treat.  I may still eat it, but occasionally.  It’s putting sugar in its proper place on my plate.

Even so, the temptation is greater during a plateau.  It’s hard not to, but don’t get discouraged during these times.  Try not to give in to temptation for that chocolate éclair at the bakery or doughnuts in the lunch room.  I may reach for pepper or celery sticks with hummus or maybe fruit.  Before you know it, you’ll be dropping pounds and losing inches again.
